February 28th marked the inaugural Demo Day for Startupbootcamp Smart City Dubai. The event held a great significance not only to the Dubai program but also to the global accelerator, since it is Startupbootcamp’s first ever Demo Day in the MENA region.
The journey started 10 months ago, when Startupbootcamp Smart City Dubai Kicked off with a bang. After visiting more than 30 cities, receiving 1000+ applications and conducting more than 350 startup meetings, the first cohort was finally selected in October. Ten innovative startups determined to disrupt the Smart City industry, started their exciting journey in November.
For three months the teams striving for improvement, have worked first hand with a wide network of mentors and industry experts. They have worked on everything from business models, MVPs, product development and customer validations. They have also focused on refining their pitches working with top storytelling trainers on how they present their unique stories to the world. The 10 teams were finally ready to scale up their business reshaping the future of Smart Cities.
The Demo Day was hosted at our partner’s Dubai Chamber of Commerce premises, providing space for pitches, networking and startups showcasing their products. It kicked off with a little surprise for the attendees, a Tanoura dancer took over the stage giving the attendees an impressive performance based on Middle Eastern historical dance. Todd OBrien, Managing Director, spoke about how the spinning art of the tanoura dancer mirrors the life of innovators. As acceleration increases so does centrifugal force. The innovator must stay centered, have passion, intensity and focus, and most of all be prepared for the ride. He concluded with a remarkable recap of the journey of Startupbootcamp Smart City first cohort:
“We are super excited about our first cohort, a diversified group of entrepreneurs from all over the world with one goal in their minds: Reshaping the Smart City Industry. The teams have progressed drastically in a short period of time. During the last few months we have worked hard not only to help them develop their products but also to provide them with maximum exposure.. However this is only the beginning, we are planning to keep up the momentum to assist the startups as they secure their first rounds of funding, close more corporate partnerships, build successful pilots and grow their customer base. I believe that the 10 startups represent the uprise in the Smart City industry, and we will help them drive toward a continued success.”
The 10 startups then hit the stage showcasing their products to an audience of 150+ of VCs, investors, corporate partners and mentors. Each team had just 3 minutes, to demonstrate their value propositions. However they managed to take the audience by the storm, the quality of their pitches and storytelling techniques were remarkable.
After the 10 pitches, it was time for networking. The 10 teams had booths to showcase their products, which facilitated their networking with the audience, they were able to discuss their ideas more. The 2018 cohort started conversations with VCs about possibility of raising funds, securing partnerships with corporate and expanding their networks.
By the sunset, it was time to have fun and celebrate. The 10 startups, investors, and mentors all joined the SBC team in a boat party around Dubai creek. The attendees enjoyed the charming scenery of Dubai’s skyline during sunset, whilst continuing their conversations.
All in all it was an impressive first Smart City Dubai Demo, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our amazing partners: Dubai Chamber of Commerce, Dubai Silicon Oasis, du, Orange Business Services, RIT Dubai, Smart Dubai and Visa.
