Amazon is going beyond the — literally. At the Amazon Web Services () re:Invent conference, the cloud providing unveiled Ground Station, a new cloud aimed at companies that own . Amazon has installed ground antennas at its centers around the , which can now retrieve satellite from space so that owners can process it in Amazon’s cloud.

According to AWS CEO Andy Jassy, customers requested the service. “Customers said that we have so much data in space with so many applications that want to use that data. Why don’t you make it easier,” he said.

Without AWS Ground Station, satellite owners would need to buy land and build their own ground stations. Amazon claims its service can save them up to 80 percent.
